Bay Lee “Smitty” Smith
June 9, 1946 – October 20, 2026
Bay Lee Smith, lovingly known by everyone as “Smitty,” went home to be with the Lord on October 20, 2026. Under the compassionate care of hospice, Smitty was able to spend his final days in the comfort of his own home, surrounded by the love of so many family members who cherished him dearly.
Born in Pennsylvania on June 9, 1946, to Ray and Faye Smith, Smitty’s life took him to Georgia after he was drafted into the United States Army shortly after graduating from high school. He was stationed at Fort Benning, Georgia, where he would put down roots and spend the remainder of his life, building a family, lasting friendships, and a lifetime of memories.
One of the greatest blessings of Smitty’s life was his marriage to the love of his life and best friend, Carol Smith. Together, they shared 42 wonderful years of marriage, love, laughter, and companionship. Their bond was a beautiful testament to a life shared with someone who truly meant everything.
Smitty was a devoted father who will be terribly missed by his four children and their spouses: Philip and Christy Smith, Wendy Baxter, James and Debbie Chumney, and Donna and Clayton Spurlin. His greatest legacy lives on through his 13 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren, all of whom knew him affectionately as “Pawpaw.” His family was his pride and joy, and the love he gave them will continue to live on through generations to come.
To know Smitty was to love him. He had a personality that made people feel welcome, a sense of humor that could bring a smile to anyone’s face, and a genuine, caring heart that made him unforgettable. He was funny, sincere, and as warm and comforting as a big teddy bear. He was the kind of man who left an impression on everyone he met, and the world was a little brighter because he was in it.
Smitty retired from Porter Paints, where he became well-known and respected throughout the painting community. Through his years of hard work, friendships, and dedication, he built a reputation that extended far beyond his job. He was more than a familiar face in the community; he was someone people remembered, respected, and loved.
Though his family takes comfort in knowing he is now at peace, his absence will leave an immeasurable emptiness in the hearts of those who loved him. The laughter, the stories, the hugs, and the memories he leaves behind will forever be treasured. His family will carry his love with them always, finding comfort in the countless ways he touched their lives.
Smitty was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Ray and Faye Smith, and his sister, Kay. He is survived by his devoted wife, Carol; his four children and their spouses; his 13 grandchildren; his 26 great-grandchildren; and his younger sister, Gay, along with many extended family members and dear friends who will miss him more than words can express.
Though our hearts are broken, we find peace in knowing that Smitty has gone home to be with the Lord and is reunited with the loved ones who went before him. His earthly journey has ended, but the love he gave, the laughter he shared, and the memories he created will never fade.
Rest peacefully, Smitty. You were loved by so many, and you will be missed more than words could ever say. Until we meet again.
