Ronald L. Capion
May 14, 1943 – August 10, 2026
Ronald L. Capion, 83, passed away on August 10, 2026, in Auburn, Alabama, surrounded by family. He was born May 14, 1943, in Freeport, Illinois, to Allen Capion and Dorothy (Roesger) Capion. Freeport was home to Ronald for most of his life. In the final six months of his life, he moved to Alabama to be closer to his family.
Ronald was a one-of-a-kind man who never met a stranger—and rarely met a situation that didn’t call for a joke, a solution, or his two cents’ worth.
He was a hardworking and resourceful man who spent his career at Micro Switch (Honeywell) and gave generously of his time as an avid Boy Scout volunteer.
Ronald was frugal, and he wasn’t the least bit ashamed of it. In fact, he took great pride in getting the most out of everything. His philosophy was simple: if it’s broken, fix it. If it couldn’t be used the way it was originally intended, find another use for it. Throwing something away was often the last resort.
He was always ready to offer his opinion on a project, too. Those who knew him well can probably hear him saying, “Food for thought…” or “What you oughta do…” before launching into his latest suggestion. His advice was usually given freely, whether it had been requested or not.
And then there was his humor.
Ronald was goofy, playful, and sometimes decidedly off-color. He loved to make people laugh, catch someone off guard with a joke, and keep everyone guessing about what he might say next. His sense of humor was unmistakably his own—and those who loved him wouldn’t have wanted him any other way.
But beneath the jokes and practical advice was a man who was generous with his time. He was willing to help, willing to teach, and willing to share what he knew. He gave his time to Scouting, to family through countless projects and conversations, and to anyone who happened to cross his path.
Ronald is preceded in death by his parents, Allen and Dorothy (Roesger) Capion, sister, Betty Smith, and brother, Gary Capion.
Ronald is survived by his children, Karl Capion (Tina), Amanda Hermans (Troy), Mindy Peterson (Scott), and Angela Galloway (Alexius); his five granddaughters; and his twin brother, Robert Capion, his last surviving sibling.
Memorial service to celebrate Ronald’s life will be held in Freeport IL on Saturday, October 17, 2026 at Chapel Hill Cemetery at 11:00AM.
In lieu of flowers, please send donations to a charity of your choice in Ronald’s name.
